How the calculation works
Cups per bag = weight ÷ grams per cup; cost per cup = price ÷ cups per bag; cost per month = cost per cup × cups per day × 30
A worked example
A 1 kg bag at €13.99 makes 125 espressos of 8 g: €0.11 a cup, €6.72 a month at two cups a day, €0.24 less per cup than a €0.35 capsule. At 10 g for filter coffee the same bag makes 100 cups at €0.14.
Espresso, filter and the grams that matter
The cost of a cup is the coffee it takes. A single espresso uses about 7 to 9 g, a double 14 to 18 g, a mug of filter coffee 10 to 15 g. Weigh one dose once and use that figure here.
Beans, ground or capsules
Beans and ground coffee cost the same per gram as their price per kilo says. A capsule costs its price per piece, whatever is inside: compare the two per cup here, or per kilo with the capsule calculator.
Common questions
How many cups are in a kilo of coffee?
About 125 espressos at 8 g each, or 100 cups of filter coffee at 10 g. A stronger recipe makes fewer.
Is ground coffee cheaper per cup than beans?
Compare their prices per kilo: per gram of coffee, a cup costs the same whichever form it comes in. Beans keep their aroma longer once opened.
